The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) offers two bachelor of science degrees, both degree programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. Our world-class faculty follow a curriculum that provides a strong foundation in the fundamentals, while including theory and practical experience, and senior-level electives for specialization in specific areas.
BS in Electrical Engineering
Our BS in Electrical Engineering (BS-ELEN) program prepares students to design and develop a wide range of electrical systems and devices, from small-scale components to large-scale infrastructures. The program provides students with the freedom and opportunity to innovate, while providing a strong foundation to tackle society’s most pressing challenges through technological advancement. Some of the technologies our students develop include autonomous vehicles, robots, electronic chips, satellites, communication networks, wearable technology, brain-machine interfaces, and the power grid.

BS in Computer Engineering
Our BS in Computer Engineering (BS-CpE) program aligns with industry trends by integrating hardware and software to develop efficient, intelligent, secure, and powerful computing systems. The computer engineering program is built around computer-aided design tools that can simulate and assist with the design of new devices and systems, such as high-performance computers, smartphones, tablets, autonomous vehicles, drones, computer networks, smart factories, and defense systems. This program is one of only three selected to be part of Virginia’s Tech Talent Investment program to establish a pipeline of talent to the growing technology workforce.

Highly qualified BS students may obtain a master's degree in Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering in a shorter time frame through the Bachelor's-to-Accelerated Master's (BAM) pathway.
Minor in Electrical and Computer Engineering
The Electrical and Computer Engineering minor is a broad program designed to provide students in engineering, math or science majors with the foundational knowledge to build and analyze analog and digital circuits as well as signals and systems that form the foundations of any electronic system ranging from smart phones to satellites.
These foundation courses enable students to then take on higher-level coursework as part of the minor electives, providing them with a deeper understanding and hands-on opportunity to build a range of hardware systems.
